Theory of Grammar Cases

• CHARLES J. FILLMORE has been extremely influential in the areas of syntax and lexical semantics.
• He was a proponent of Noam Chomsky’s theory of generative grammar.
• During the earliest transformational grammar phase, he focuses in Linguistics concepts as syntax and semantics.

a) Syntax is the study of the principles and rules for constructing phrases and sentences in natural languages.
b) Semantics is the study of interpretation of signs or symbols as used by agents or communities with a particular circumstances and contexts.

Grammar Cases
Charles Fillmore was one of the first linguistic to introduce a representation of linguistic knowledge that blurred this strong distinction between syntactic and semantic knowledge of a language.
The figure to the right presents the basis ideas that define a case structure grammar.
Linguistic knowledge is organized around verbs or more precisely, a verb sense. A verb may have more than one sense or meaning, these would be different representation in a case grammar. Case Grammar is a system of linguistic analysis.
This system was created by Charles J. Fillmore in 1968 in the context of Transformational Grammar.
